Palisades Rocks the Fourth: Artist Spotlight
The Fourth of July is the one day of the year when Pacific Palisades is at its small-town best. Chairs are trustingly left out the night before, staking out parade viewing spots for
family members of all ages. The day begins early with the races, continues with the parade, and the excitement continues to build, culminating with the fireworks show at Palisades Charter High School.
Another highlight is the Palisades Rocks the Fourth concert, now in its 10th year.
This year’s headliner is High Tide Rolling Review, featuring Adam Topol, who will be
playing with Will Phillips (co-leader of the band), Merlo Podlewski, Chris Joyner,
Kenny Lyon, Marcele Berger, Rodrigo Castro, Jillian Jensen, Ralike and Alan Berliant.
Topol is a drummer/percussionist who is currently on tour with Jack Johnson. He
also writes and produces, including his 2016 album, Regardless of the Dark.
This is Topol’s third time performing at the concert. “We tried to cover a wide list so
we can reach everybody,” Topol said about playing cover songs that all ages will enjoy.
“It’s a really great band, a really fun review,” Topol said.
“My tastes are a little bit more eclectic or old-school,” Topol said. For the show, the
High Tide Rolling Review will be covering songs by a range of artists and styles, including
the Rolling Stones, Sublime, Joe Cocker, Toots and the Maytals, Blondie and Bruno Mars.
Topol likens the Palisades to his hometown of Lake Tahoe.
“Lake Tahoe is a smaller, tight-knit community where everyone is together, like a family
vibe. People come out and enjoy a really important holiday, and get up and dance.”
Palisades Rocks the Fourth is “about the people who go and watch the fireworks.
We’re there just to play what they might know and like, and provide a setting where
people can dance and have fun and be with their loved ones and friends and family
and acknowledge the holiday.”
The Berklee College of Music (Boston) and USC grad began playing drums at around age 11. He has lived in Los Angeles on and off since 1989, and currently lives in Venice. Topol spends a lot of time in the Palisades, and kids that he’s an “ally” of the area. “I circled back to L.A. because the music scene and the art scene is so strong. It always pulled me back. “I seem to connect with the diverse music community here. I really love Latin
music. I love indie bands,” he said. He hopes to bring “good energy” to the
event, and wants people to bring comfy blankets and thoroughly enjoy themselves.
“It’s just going to be a fun, community event,” Topol said. “I’m grateful being asked

Get Ready to Party, Palisades News June 7, 2017
After the Fourth of July parade, the party will move to the Palisades High baseball field for food trucks, picnics, kids activities and the concert before the fireworks. Join the several thousand
people who just want to get mellow and enjoy some great music.
The music festival “Palisades Rocks the 4th” was started in 2008 by Palisades residents Keith Turner and Rob Weber, not only to provide a venue for the best local musicians, but as a way to expand the day of patriotism in this community.
Over the past nine years, musicians who have played with the Foo Fighters, Jack Johnson, Pink, Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, Neil Young, Joe Walsh, and Wilco have all performed, along with Rocky Dawuni and The English Beat.
What started as a local band playing before the fireworks show has now expanded to 300 minutes of live music on two stages. “B Stage” performances this year will start at 4 p.m. Returning by popular demand is Cohort, which features students Tula Jussen and Jack Ross (Palisades High), Emilio Ana mos (Crossroads) and Harry Clennon (Santa Monica High). Their lead – er, sophomore Jussen, has joined the “Palisades Rocks the 4th” production team as a producer this year. Also on stage will be Keith Carrington, who is on the Theatre Palisades board and recently cut a country record. Visit: keithcarrington.com. Rounding out the on-stage talent will be Phat Trick, a Palisades youth band, which has performed at the Mint, the Whisky,
the Rock n Roll Half Marathon and other events. Their originals are high energy and they’ve included covers in their shows from The Black Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Kings of Leon, and Guns N Roses.
The Main Stage show starts at 6 p.m. with the Palisades Charter High School
Band, under the direction of Alex Dale.
Returning for a second year are the Palisades All-Stars, directed by local musician and educator Tom Farrell, along with esteemed jazz drummer and local music teacher Dylan Ryan. Farrell and his wife, Reiko Nakano, own and operate Sound Roads Music in Santa Monica. The group will be playing a set of classic rock.
Opening for the headliner is the Terraplanes, a great blues band, which performs originals and covers. The band features Biff Tate on vocals, Matt Mayer on electric guitar, Kent Land on guitar, Bill Threlkeld on drums and Tom Hofer on bass.
This year, to celebrate the “old and the new,” a nine-year tradition of live music and a new location, an all-star band, “The High Tide Rolling Review,” will perform. Palisades resident and professional musician Adam Topol, whose main gig is as Jack Johnson’s drummer, has put together an incredible group of musicians, who will play 100 percent covers. The audience will
be treated to songs by artists such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Cheap
Trick, the Strokes, the Chainsmokers, the Black Keys, MGMT, Sublime, Bruno Mars,
David Bowie, and the Go-Gos.
